As part of our trip, we spent a lot of our time visiting with my mom’s brothers and sisters that still live in Ireland. On one day, my Aunt Kathleen and Uncle Jimmy picked us up and brought us out to Ashford Castle and they also took us out to visit Cong.

Visiting Cong was a spur of the moment decision. On the grounds of Ashford Castle is a thatched roof cottage that may have been used for the filming on the John Wayne movie The Quiet Man.

On my trip to Northern Ireland, I visited the Giant’s Causeway, the rope bridge and our last stop was the Dark Hedges. I’ve never seen Game of Thrones (I don’t get HBO) but visiting the Dark Hedges was the main reason I went on this tour.

Before our trip I spent some time on Pinterest coming up with ideas for places to see. When I came across some pictures of the Dark Hedges I knew that this was one stop that I had to make.

During my recent trip to Ireland, I planned a day trip to the North of Ireland. Part of my plan was to spend time visiting the Giant’s Causeway.

The Giant’s Causeway is located in County Antrim on the northeast coast of Northern Ireland. It is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns and is the result of a volcanic eruption. However, the legend tells a different story.

My mom grew up in Ireland and she still has a number of siblings living there – 7 to be precise. Growing up, home was a farm. In fact my Uncle Tom and his wife Mary and their children are living there and running the farm now.

When we head to Ireland, we always make time to visit my Granny’s house down in Knock, Co Mayo. She passed over a decade ago but you can still feel her presence in the green fields.
