BIST 5km Run, Walk and Roll

image

This morning I completed the Brain Injury Society of Toronto’s (BIST) annual 5km run, walk and roll to raise money for people with brain injuries. This is a cause near and dear to my heart… and my head. Three years ago, I was in a motor vehicle accident which left me with a traumatic brain injury.

Writing this blog post is a big step for me because this is the first time that I have mentioned this to anyone who isn’t a close family member or friend. My accident and the injuries that I sustained have taken up a big focus of my life for the last three years. There have been a lot of changes and adjustments, complications and surgeries and for the first time I feel like I can finally start to focus on me and my recovery.

My injury is one of the reasons that I started this blog. My life was all medical appointments and doctor visits and I needed to have something in my life that was fun. This blog, which focuses on my interest in fashion, has been a nice distraction. I enjoy blogging. For me it is fun but it has also been a challenge. At this point I am doing everything myself, including taking all of my photos. Except this lovely photo of my after the 5km; my Aunt took this one. It was freezing this morning so I am wearing a lot of layers.

My injuries have been an adjustment and they are also the reason why I don’t update the blog as much as I would like to. I get tired and frequent headaches and everything takes me longer than it used to. Despite the injuries, surgeries and complications, I have been very lucky. My brain injury is fairly mild, and I have a great support network who has helped me through it.

The story of what happened to me, is long and complicated. It’s one that I might share one day but not today. I’m not ready to talk more about it, and since this blog is mainly about fashion, you might not be interested in hearing it. For today, this is enough for me to share. Thanks for reading!

Charlene xoxo
