I came back on Sunday from another 10-day silent retreat. This retreat I went out to Quebec for and the site where it was held was beautiful!!
The night before I left I stayed up late writing a few blog posts to be published during my absence. I was about to write this one on self-care when I realized 2 things: 1) how late it was and I had an early flight and 2) it was a little hypocritical of me to write about needing to practice self-care while staying up way to late. All I would be doing is ensuring that I would be tired the next day. So I turned off my laptop so that I could practice some self-care and figured this post could wait to be written until I came back.
Why Self-Care is Important
I know that I have for sure been guilty of neglecting myself and my needs over the years. Since the accident and the long recovery process that I have been undergoing, I have become a bit better at taking care of myself but I still slip up now and again.
I try and schedule too many tasks in one day when really, there is no need to try to fit so much in. I know that I can’t be the only one that is guilty of this??
Staying up too late. Grabbing fast and convenient food that probably isn’t very healthy. Or skipping out on our regular workouts. At the time it might not seem like a big deal but like everything else it builds. Practicing self-care on a regular basis is a new habit and one that is important to build into our schedules.
Practicing self-care regularly can be as simple as getting enough sleep in a night – not an easy task for a lot of people, I know. By loading our schedules to the breaking point, we often stay up late just so we can get everything done when really, most of the items on our list can realistically be saved for another day.
When we take better care of ourselves and our bodies we are saying that WE matter. That our health matters.Ā When we neglect ourselves we can start to get run down from exhaustion which can often lead us to get sick.
So, what are some ways that we can practice self-care?
5 ways to practice self-care
- Scratch off anything on your to-do list that has been hanging around for awhile. Face it, if you haven’t done it yet, you probably never will. Why stress and feel guilty about it when you can just take it off and forget about it!
- Do one thing a day that just makes you happy.
- Unplug for one hour. Turn off your cell phone so that you can forget about your email and social media updates. This one might be hard for some people but just try to give it a go and see how it makes you feel.
- Get outside and go for a run or a walk.
- Have an at-home spa date. Take a long soak in the tub or give yourself an at home mani/pedi. Something relaxing that will also make you feel good.
These are just five simple tips but I am sure that you can think of so many more ways that you can take better care of yourself. For me, it often means taking a rest, but your body might be needing something else. Learning how to tune in and listen to your body and what it is trying to tell you is a great skill to develop.
