Cleaning Out Your Closet Part 2: Discovering What Works For Your Life

In my previous post about cleaning out your closet, I spoke about using the KonMari Method. This is a very popular method and I can see why. When you really examine everything you own piece by piece you can really see what you have and decide what works for your life.

Discovering what Works & What Doesn’t

I’m at a bit of an awkward place in my life. Since the accident, I haven’t been medically cleared to return to work, so these days I am working on getting my Masters, training to be a certified Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction teacher, working on my recovery through physiotherapy and other exercise and rehabilitation programs and working on the blog. All of these areas of my life require different clothing options. So when I am cleaning out my closet I need to keep all of these areas of my life in mind. While a pair of joggers might not necessarily “spark joy” they are pretty useful for the gym or for my silent meditation retreats!

Not only do I need to keep in mind the way my life is now, but I also need to be prepared for my future life. At some point in the (hopefully) near future I will be returning to work in some capacity. So I will need to hang onto some clothes that are appropriate for working with children with special needs/mental health issues. As I continue on my Mindfulness path, I will also need to have clothes that are comfortable, professional and easy to move around in. Plus, I need to have cute clothes to photograph for the blog! šŸ˜‰

As I get stronger, I am also starting to return to having a bit of a social life. So it is time to dust off the going out clothes and give them a spin.

Styles change, I’ve changed, and some of my clothes no longer fit. My taste has also changed so some of my older clothes will no longer work for me. My skin has also become crazy sensitive since the fourth surgery and a lot of my clothes I can’t wear anymore because they are too scratchy and itchy. Which really sucks because I love some of the sweaters that I can no longer wear. It’s weird, I wore them before the last surgery and they were fine, but now? I last about 5 minutes before I feel like ripping my skin off. Not a good feeling.

So, as I clean out my closet I am taking all of this into consideration. I’m really looking at each and every piece of clothing and figuring out if it still works for me and my life. Now and into the future. It’s been really helpful and I have managed to remove several things out of my closet. Next week, we’ll look at what to do with your clothes after a closet clean-out.
