One of my goals for 2016 is to get better at taking photos. Especially the photos that I use for the blog. Up to this point, I have been using a point and shoot camera or my iPhone 5c for all of my pictures. As I mentioned before, on Cyber Monday, I picked up a new DSLR camera and a few lenses for myself. I wanted to learn how to use the camera and all of its features so I decided to sign up for some classes.
I found GTA Photography Classes which offers classes and workshops for adults to learn the fundamentals for taking excellent pictures. They offer the basics as well as specialty classes like portraiture and product photography. I have always loved taking photos and I had even taken some classes in high school and university. However, that was before DSLR cameras came along.
Since I will be using this new camera for my blog, I wanted to really get a lot of hands on experience so I purchased a package deal where I could take several different classes throughout the year. I recently completed my first group of classes, Photo 101, and I really enjoyed it! Our teacher, Reem, taught us how to shoot our photos in manual mode. This allows you to adjust for lighting and motion to help make sure that your photos turn out the way that you want them to.
A Photo Journal
We did a field trip as part of the classes so that we could go outside and practice taking some photos. Here are a few of mine.
As you can see, I was practicing a lot with depth of field. I wanted to learn how to focusing in on a particular area, like the hat sign, or the fence, and make it the feature of the photo. I really like how these turned out.
We also had a homework assignment where we had to shoot an object at different angles. I chose to use this Kate Spade box that I got with a necklace that I bought myself for Christmas. I’m too kind to myself š For this assignment, I got down on my hands and knees, stood on a chair, and I even lay down on the floor!! This first shot was the one where I lay down on the floor and it is my favourite! I took it right by the window to make use of the natural light.
I am really glad that I took these classes, as I now feel a lot more comfortable shooting with this new camera. I will start using it here on the blog in my upcoming photos. You can let me know if you start to see an improvement š
