Happy Monday!! It’s hard to believe that October is almost over!! Next week is Halloween, how is that even possible!! Where has the time gone?
When you think about time, and how quickly it moves, it’s easy to see how the little things can get missed.
Sometimes it’s the Little things that Turn out to be the big things
All of the little moments in our lives add up. Missing a night out here or there with family or friends might not seem like such a big deal. You’re busy. Life happens. Before you know it so much time has passed that it’s been months since you last got together.
Or maybe you’re great at juggling all that life has to throw at you. You make time for your friends and family. I mean, sure, you’re checking your phone most of the time, but it’s not like work stops, right??
I’m sure that everyone can relate to this feeling. I know that I sure can. My phone is always beside me, and it is constantly going off. Now, most of my notifications are basically emails about different sales or newsletters that I have subscribed to, but checking my phone is a habit that I’m guilty of as well.
What would happened if you turned off your phone? Have you tried it? It sounds REALLY difficult but the truth is it’s like everything else. The hardest part is the thinking about it. The doing is so much easier.
Since I started learning about and practicing mindfulness I’ve learnt how to be present. To be here in the moment. I can tell you, there are so many things that I am more aware of now then I ever was before. I thought that in order to do all the little things, to make sure that they got done, I had to do ALL of them. Like, at the same time. I thought I was the master at multi-tasking! Reality – not so much.
When I learned how to be present I discovered that I could create space in my head and in my life. I no longer felt the need to try to jam too many things in at the same time. I could pick one task and focus on it. My work actually got better and I was also surprisingly more productive.
Take this blog post for instance. I tried working on it while I was watching Madam Secretary (I LOVE this show!!) and it just wasn’t coming together quickly. I actually thought that I wouldn’t be able to finish writing it and would have to wake up earlier to do it. That meant I might not get to the gym and I haven’t gone in a few days.
Though, once I turned off the TV and just focused on this post, BOOM!! It just came together so quickly. Within minutes I had an entire post written.
Mindfulness has taught me so much. I’m better at being there for the little things. Like playing a game with my niece and nephew (who totally cheats btw). Or singing a song or reading a book to my baby niece. Or even just paying attention to one of my favourite tv shows.
The little things in life can be anything. Whatever is of interest to you and makes you feel good. If it’s spending time watching tv, then so be it. Living a life with mindfulness is about intention. It’s about making the conscious choice. And consciously choosing to Netflix and chill is fine. When you just flop down on the couch and the next thing you know it’s hours later, you’re not being mindful.
Learning any skill takes time and practice. I’ve been practicing mindfulness for two years now and sometimes I can still be engaging in a mindless activity. I just notice when this happens. It will happen, because no one is perfect. I just go back to practicing my mindfulness skills.

See you on the path,
I couldn’t agree more and really needed to hear this. I’ve had a very unexpected and expensive year filled with heartache, and financial set backs. When I look back at the hardest moments, I remember the bright parts of those hard days and not the darkest. It puts things in perspective and helps you feel less helpless as future issues may arise.
Thanks Melody! I really like how you have shifted your perspective and think about the bright parts of those hard and difficult days! I hope that going forward things are looking brighter for you
xx
This is so true. I have some regrets by not realizing this sooner but am thankful I am doing better with the little things.
That’s great Tami, I’m glad to hear that you are doing better with the little things in life
This is so true! When I am working on a blog post I have to it with no distractions (like TV), otherwise it will take me forever to get it done.
